Sport has always played a very important part in the life of children at Blackburn School. All children have two PE lessons and one games lesson. In addition there are opportunities to take part in a wide range of sports during lunch-times, after school and at weekends:

Athletics - the school competes in the  2W's (Winterhill/Wingfield) Cluster athletics event. Children, with potential, are encouraged to join the Rotherham Harriers Athletic Club. A day is annually held to allow Y6 children to experience a range of track and field events;
Chess - in addition to social chess we have a team that plays in local, county and national competitions. Many children represent the town and Yorkshire.;
Cross country - the children compete in the 2W cluster event.
Football - regular training is held for all Junior children interested in the sport. We play in the Rotherham U11 Primary School League and the Rotherham Advertiser Cup, which we won in 2005. Rotherham United’s Football in the Community group have worked with our children. The football coach, Mr. Brothwell, ia qualified FA coach and also has Rotherham LA Football Coaching Certificate. The Girls’ team play in the Rotherham Championships and in local events.  Many boys and girls alos play for local football teams.
Matball - house events are held in school;
Rounders - the children compete in the 2W cluster event;
Short Tennis - we have a club that includes children from Y2 to Y6. Matches are played against other interested schools. In 2005 the children were finalists in the Yorkshire Short Tennis Championships, after winning the Rotherham and South Yorkshire events. At Y5 the children start to play at Rotherham Moorgate LTC and develop the skills of full Lawn Tennis. Sponsorship has been given by Yorkshire LTA.   We also have an LTA coach, Hannah Lewis from Hallamshire Tennis Club, who coaches each Thursday in school.  Funding has been gained from Awards for All.
Table Tennis – the school team won the Rotherham Championships in June 2003 and were runners-up in June 2004 & 5.   Coaching is given each Tuesday by Alan Dunn from Rotherham Scorpions.
